Vital Home Security Alarm Tips

Christina Watkins

If you have been thinking about improving your home security, you might have considered having a security alarm installed. This is a great way to deter intruders and stop them in their tracks if they try to open a door or window when the alarm is turned on. However, there are some things you need to know first in order to use it efficiently. Here are some important home security alarm tips to be sure you follow.

Change the Alarm Code Periodically

When you first have your alarm system installed, the installing company will ask you to choose an alarm code and program it into the system. Make sure you choose a code that is difficult for anyone to guess. It should not be related to you in any way, so don't use numbers from your home or work address, license plate number, driver's license number, phone number, or birthdays and anniversaries. You also want to change the alarm code periodically just in case someone has gotten access to the code, such as if your teen wrote it down somewhere and another student noticed it.

Use a Home Automation System

It is also a good idea to not just have a sound alarm, but connect it to a more advanced alarm system. For example, you can get a video surveillance system that is associated with a home automation system. This allows you to keep track of different areas of your home from anywhere by using an app on your phone or mobile device. If you are at work or traveling, you can check the cameras from your phone to be sure nobody has broken into your home. You will also be able to check in if an alarm goes off and alerts you.

Have Motion Detectors Connected to the System

You might also want to improve the security of your home alarm system by connecting it to motion detectors. This often deters a burglar from actually trying to break in and causes them to leave. For example, you can motion-activated lights in the front of your house where lights go on if they get too close to a door, window, or the garage. The lights might cause them to leave without bothering to break in. There are also sound alarms that go off if someone gets too close to your property.

Include Glass Break Detectors

Not all alarm systems come with glass breaking detectors, so if someone breaks a back window, it might not immediately cause the alarm to go off. It is a good idea to have an alarm system with glass break detectors installed on all major windows of your home. The bottom floor windows are the ones to be most concerned about.
